I didn't open it.
I dried it on my shirt and put it back in his pocket, exactly where it had been.
When Ivo came in from the road, I was still at the sink.
"Keys?" I said.
He patted his jacket on the chair and handed them over.
He didn't check the other pocket.
For the first time since July, I had a good secret.
Sunday was clear and cold and blue.
At four o'clock, the lawn of the big house was full of white chairs.
The salon ladies came in a pack.
The clients came in their church clothes.
The housekeeper stood under the rose arch in a navy dress, holding a little book.
She'd gotten herself ordained online in a weekend.
I stood beside my mother in a green dress, not the work pants.
Ivo stood beside his father.
Mom wore yellow.
Augustin had seen her come down the terrace steps in it and had to turn around and look at the water for a minute.
"Dearly beloved," the housekeeper said dryly. "Again."
The salon ladies laughed.
Augustin went first.
He held both of Mom's hands and said his vows in a low, steady voice.
