Chapter 31: Crawlspace
"Where?" I said.
"You're not saying no."
"I'm asking where. Answer the question."
He took his phone out and showed me a photo.
A small gray-shingled house on the shore road, with a porch that faced the dunes and a crooked mailbox.
"Two bedrooms," he said. "One for us. One for your sprayers. Ten minutes from your mother."
"You measured."
"I drove it twice."
"Is it for sale?"
"For rent. I didn't want to buy you a house." He put the phone away. "You'd have made me sell it."
I laughed.
He wasn't wrong.
"Half the rent," I said. "From my account. Every month."
"Yes."
"And I pick the side of the bed."
"You were always going to pick the side of the bed."
"Then yes."
His shoulders dropped.
Then he picked me up off the terrace and kissed me against the stone rail until somebody inside turned on the dishwasher and we both laughed into each other's mouths.
We moved on the first Saturday of October.
It took one trip.
Everything I owned fit in the back of my truck, and everything he owned was books.
