"You're asking me?" I said.
"You're her daughter. And you were right about me before anyone else was."
"I gave you a deadline."
"And I'd have missed it." He turned the velvet box over in his fingers. "I'm asking because you held me to it."
I looked at his forearm.
The ladder of little cuts had healed into thin white lines.
Sixty gallons' worth.
"Does she know you're asking me?"
"No. I wanted your answer before I had hers."
"She'll say yes."
"You can't know that."
"I've known her twenty-six years. She's been planning the flowers since the motel."
He laughed, very quietly.
"Yes," I said. "You have my blessing. On one condition."
"Name it."
"When she asks for the face at the vows, you don't hold any of it back."
"I wouldn't dare."
I hugged him.
He went stiff with surprise, then hugged me back so hard my feet came off the greenhouse floor.
He smelled like espresso and the orchids.
