Chapter 22: The Offer
I turned off the water.
"Which ones?"
"The good ones." Pilar brushed crumbs off her fingers.
"My son at your door at eleven at night. Your hand on his shirt under that ugly yellow light. The hotel carpet."
"A few stills from the courtyard."
She smiled. "Between the groundbreaking in 1976 and your grandfather's retirement party. Right after dessert."
"My aunts will be there. Their grandchildren will be there."
"Then you should sign before dessert, mija."
She walked out of the kitchen.
I stood at the sink with my hands dripping.
Outside the window, the kids were chasing each other around the fountain, and the motion light was blazing for nobody.
The next morning, at 8:10, Mateo called me.
"My mother just called," he said, before I could say hello. "She wants me at her office at ten. She said come alone."
"You're telling me."
"Terms," he said. "First one. No secrets."
I sat down on my kitchen floor.
Something in my chest opened that had been shut since the trailer.
"Then we both go," I said.
Pilar's corner office at Varela Construction had been Abuelo's estimating room for forty years.
