Chapter 21: Thanksgiving

"What did she ask you?" I said.

The nurse folded her hands on the back of the pew.

"She came to the nurses' station on a Wednesday afternoon. Very well dressed. Pearls."

"She said she was family of the builder in bed four, and she was putting together a little memorial book."

The nurse's mouth went thin.

"She asked if he'd been alert that week. If he'd talked. If he'd written anything. If anyone from that week still worked nights."

"What did you tell her?"

"The truth. That he talked to you all night. That his right hand never moved again after the stroke."

"That I checked it every hour and it was cold as a stone."

She looked at me over her glasses.

"She thanked me very nicely. She wrote my name down in a little notebook. Then she asked if I'd be on shift in December."

I felt sick.

"She was finding out who could hurt her," I said.

"I've been a nurse twenty-two years, mija. I know when someone's counting witnesses." She stood up. "When's your party?"

"The thirteenth of December."

"I'm off that Saturday," the nurse said. "Tell me where to stand."

Thanksgiving at the Varela house was forty people.

It had been forty people since before I was born.
