Chapter 20: The Plan
My father looked at me.
Then at Mateo.
Then at me again.
"Him and you," he said slowly. "Since February."
"Since February, Dad."
"February." He put his glasses back on, as if they'd help. "The honeymoon."
"We met at your engagement dinner. I was twenty-six. We never grew up together. We never lived in the same house until you married her."
My father's face did several things at once.
None of them were anger.
He stared at me, completely stunned.
"The fountain," he said. "That morning. Your feet."
"Yes."
"The hotel. The shirt from the site box."
"Yes."
He nodded slowly.
He got up out of Abuelo's chair.
He walked past both of us to the window and looked out at the courtyard for a long time.
"I'm going to sit outside," he said. "I'm going to sit on the fountain. Don't either of you come out."
He went.
We watched him through the glass.
He sat on the edge of the dry fountain in his robe with his hands between his knees.
