Chapter 9: Eight Weeks
The pack made a party of it, and I was the only one in the house who did not want to go.
They carried food to my room for two days.
They put a hot brick wrapped in flannel at the foot of my narrow bed.
The tall housekeeper brought tea made of raspberry leaf and stood over me until I drank it.
I was nauseous, and that was the least of what I was.
Every woman in that house looked at my middle when she thought I wasn't looking.
Every man lifted his glass when I passed the table.
I understood that I had become something they were glad of.
None of it had to do with me.
On Saturday night, the twenty-second, I went into the pantry off the back kitchen to get away from the noise.
I stood among the shelves of canned peaches and jars of apple butter with my hands flat on a cold marble slab.
The door opened behind me, and a smell of lilac water came in.
"It's a fine thing," said my stepmother, "to be a mother."
I turned.
Verna stood in the doorway in her good grey dress with the gold cross at her throat.
She had come to every supper since the twentieth.
The McCracken women had taken to her.
She would look down at her hands and say *I only wish Orrin had lived to see it*.
The women would sigh.
"Get out," I said.
"I will, in a moment."
She shut the door behind her.
"I wanted to say how proud I am. You've done very well for yourself, Caly. A Luna, in everything but name."
"I'm not a Luna."
"You will be." She smiled.
"There's the child. It'll be Named, and then there's no putting it back."
She smoothed her skirt.
"The Alpha won't marry you, of course. He's too bitter. But he'll give you everything, in the end, for the baby's sake."
"What do you want, Verna?"
She touched her cross.
