Chapter 20: Daylight

I did not say anything.

I lay with his hand on my bare waist and listened to him not breathe.

Gray light had started to leak around the edge of the curtain.

It was nearly morning, and the house was empty, and nobody was watching.

"Nels," I said.

"I'm awake."

"I know," I said.

"I should move my hand."

"Don't," I said.

I turned over inside his arm, slowly, until we were face to face on the pillow.

His eyes were open and dark and very close.

His eyes did not leave my face.

"Last time was for the pastor," I said. "This isn't."

"Sol."

"Say it back to me. Say you know."

"I know," he said, in a rough whisper.

I kissed him.

He made a sound against my mouth, low and wrecked, and his hand spread wide across my back and pulled me flat against him.

His mouth was hot.

It opened under mine, and I felt him shake all the way down his long body.

He had held himself in for a month, and I felt every day of it.

"Tell me to stop," he said, against my lips. "Tell me no. Now."

"No," I said.
