Chapter 21: The File

I woke alone for the second time in a month, and this time I thought I knew why.

His side of the bed was cold, and his undershirt was gone from the floor.

I lay and looked at the ceiling.

I told myself it was the cattle, because after what he had said in the gray light I needed it to be.

I dressed, braided my hair, and went down to the kitchen.

Delores was sitting at the table.

She had let herself in, and she wore her gray church suit, with her purse on the chair beside her and a manila folder squared in front of her on the oilcloth.

She had made coffee in my pot.

"Good morning, honey," she said. "You look well rested."

"Get out of my kitchen."

"It was my kitchen for four years." She poured a second cup and pushed it across. "Sit. I've come to be kind."

"You've never been kind in your life."

"Then call it a courtesy." Her smile did not move. "You've been so brave, and I'd hate you to find this out in front of the judge."
