Chapter 22: Nels's POV: The Oak
Nels's POV
She did not say anything after I said yes.
She stood at the stall door with the folder in her hand, and I watched her face go quiet and polite.
She put the folder down on the rail, and she walked out of the barn.
I heard her truck start.
I stood in the stall with the currycomb on the floor at my feet and understood that I'd said the true thing, and that it was not the whole thing.

I gave the horse a bucket of oats, and I walked out and up the east lane, past the surveyors' pink tape, to the oak.
Haakon was buried on the high side of the ridge under a low granite stone.
HAAKON PER ROSTAD.
Under the name were two dates, the later one six years old, and a line from a hymn his mother had chosen.
I took off my cap.
The wind came up through the oak and moved the dry leaves.
