Chapter 23: Hilda's Table
Solveig's POV
Hilda put a plate of lefse in front of me and stood over me until I ate one.
"I am not hungry," I said.
"Nobody asked if you were."
I ate the lefse.
It was warm, and soft, and rolled around butter and sugar, the way my mother had made it when I was small.
Hilda's kitchen was the one room in the county where nobody lied to me.
The wall clock ticked, and the stove ticked, and my duffel bag sat by the door.
"He said yes," I said. "I asked him if it was penance, and he said yes."
"I heard."
"You didn't hear. I haven't told you."
"Child, I raised four sons. I know what a man's back looks like when he's said the wrong thing." She sat down across from me and folded her hands. "What did you ask?"
"If he did all of it because of Haakon."
"And what did he say?" Hilda said.
"Yes."
"Did he say it was all of it?"
I stopped with a bite of lefse halfway to my mouth.
"No," I said slowly.
"He said yes. That's different from saying that's the only reason."
