Chapter 16: Lisbon

"It's a one-way ticket," I said.

Romy looked up from the floor.

She saw the folded paper in my hand, and her face went through three expressions and settled on none.

"I bought it in August," she said. "Before I knew you."

"You knew me four years."

"Before I knew you." She stood slowly. "Ivy, it's not what it looks like."

"It looks like a seat in a plane."

"It is a seat in a plane."

"With one name on it."

"Because I'm the one who's going."

She said it quietly, and I heard what was under it.

I put the pass down on the plank.

"Say what you mean," I said.

"It starts in nine days. They've already paid the deposit, and they've put my name in a brochure." She dragged a hand over her cropped hair. "I signed it before any of this. I can't break it, and I don't want to."

"I'm not asking you to break it."

"I know you're not." She turned away to the window. "That's the problem. You're not going to ask me anything, and I'm not going to ask you."

"Why not?"

"Because if I ask you to come, you'll come."

"And that's bad?"

"You have a father who's sixty. You have a job you're good at. You have an apartment, a friend who'd walk through fire, and a life that's been put together by someone who reads everything twice." Her voice cracked. "I'm not going to be the thing that makes you throw it all in a suitcase."
