He came at six, in daylight, with a pie.
It was a store pie, and he held it out to my mother like evidence.
"Mrs. Rautio."
"Birgit," my mother said. "Come in. You're letting the heat out."
She had made the roast.
We sat at her small kitchen table, three of us, under the yellow lamp.
Nils ate nothing.
He put down his fork and folded his hands.
"I have to say something, and I'd like to say it all at once."
"Go ahead," my mother said.
"Annika and I met in February. In a hotel in Bloomington, in the snow."
My mother did not move.
"We didn't know who the other was. We didn't exchange names."
"I didn't know she was yours until I came down my father's stairs."
"Nils," I said.
"Let me finish," he said.
He did not look at me.
"I've been with your daughter since your wedding. I didn't stop when I should have."
He swallowed.
"I made a rule and broke it and I hid her, and that was the worst thing I did. I'm sorry for that."
"I'm here to say I want to be with her openly. If she'll have me."
