Chapter 19: The Chime
The all-hands meeting was held at nine on the twentieth floor, in a hall with a carpet the color of gravy.
Eighty people sat in rows.
At the front, behind a long table, sat the president of Asahigaoka Fire & Marine, who was seventy-one, small, and dressed in brown.
To his left stood Director Sugimoto, holding a stack of printed pages.
Sota sat in the third row, next to the chief, with the word Ten on his palm and his tie tied crooked on purpose.
"Our company," the Director began, "has been the victim of a campaign of obscene drawings."
A cough ran along the rows.
"The artist is among us. I have pages."
He held up page nine of chapter ninety-one.
"On this page, a man with my mustache is bound to a chair by a stapler."
"By a stapler," the president repeated, with great interest.
"The artist has mocked the dignity of the Director of Claims. He has mocked the dignity of the company."
The Director drew himself up.
"I request his dismissal."
The president looked at the page.
He looked at it for a long time.
"It is quite a good likeness," he said.
The hall made a noise.
"President," said the Director, "I must insist that the artist be identified."
"By whom?"
"By Section Two. By its chief."
All eighty heads turned toward row three.
The chief did not move.
He looked at the wall clock, a plain white one over the door, with a black second hand.
It said 9:01 and a half.
He said, very low, to nobody, "Ichinose. Phone."
Sota took his out.
At 9:02, every phone in the hall chimed.
Eighty phones, three notes each, made a bright cheerful chord.
It rolled across the carpet, from the juniors in the back to the president's own pocket.
The Director's phone, in the breast of his gray suit, went off a half second later.
