On the morning of the wedding my daughter stood on a kitchen chair and told me the hem was crooked.
"It isn't crooked," I said, through a mouthful of pins.
"It's half an inch lower on the left."
"It's the chair."
"Mom."
"Hold still."
I knelt on the linoleum in my good dress with the Singer on the table and a tape measure around my neck.
The dress was ivory crepe, plain and long, and I had cut it myself from a pattern I had drawn on butcher paper.
Britta had wanted something she could breathe in.
She had also wanted her mother's hands on it.
She'd said so on the phone from Denver in a voice that did not allow an argument.
I turned the hem up, pinned it, and ran it under the needle.
The old machine ticked along with the same sound it had made when I was twelve, at my own mother's elbow.
I clipped the thread and bit off the tail.
"There," I said.
Britta stepped down, turned in front of the hall mirror, and went very quiet.
"It's perfect," she said.
