Chapter 23: The Flick

I saw the kid, and Bodie saw me seeing him.

"Coach?" he said.

"Nothing that matters for the next map," I said. "Sound on. Everybody."

They turned their dials back up.

"Crown just told us something," I said. "Everything on that map was fake except the two men with knives."

"The pencil," the Canadian said.

"The pencil. A knife run is the only sound they need to be real, because it's the one that kills you."

I looked at all five of them.

"Ignore every boot, every clank, every hum. Listen for the pencil, and wait for it where it's going."

"Garage," the Canadian said.

"Garage. Bodie, you take the other flank."

In the fourth map, Crown filled the hallways with noise again, and the Owls stood in it.

The light, quick knife steps came around the back of the map in the first twenty seconds.

The Canadian was in the garage, and Bodie was in the dark on the other side.

They took both flankers, and Crown was three men making noise against five.

At four all, Crown's academy coach called a timeout and stopped sending knives.

Without them, Crown was five people pretending, and Mac counted bodies from the kitchen window.

We took the fourth map seven rounds to five.
