I looked at her through the glass for a long moment.
She was shivering. Her pink sweatsuit was the one from the diner.
Her right hand was jammed deep in the front pocket.
The ring was still on her left.
I'd watched Bentley lie to me for eight years. I'd learned the tells.
"Hang on," I said. "Let me find the key."
I went back to the kitchen table.
Granny's knitting basket sat by the recliner, full of blue yarn.
I opened the voice recorder on my phone, pressed the red button and laid the phone face up in the yarn.
Then I pulled a half-knitted sleeve over it.
Granny didn't wake up. Sheree's snoring didn't change.
I unlocked the front door.

Breanne sat at Granny's table in Granny's chair, the one by the window.
I made her tea, because that's what you do in this kitchen at midnight, no matter who it is.
She wrapped her left hand around the mug. Her right hand stayed in her pocket.
"He threw me out," she said. "Of the motel. Tonight."
