Chapter 19: The Counter
I read the lawsuit at the diner counter while Jeb ate his eggs.
It was forty pages long. Most of it was Bentley saying how much he'd built.
Page thirty-one was the part that mattered.
He said I'd forced him to sign the guarantee by threatening him in front of staff.
And he said my four-hundred-thousand-dollar check to the fund was company money.
A hundred and seventy thousand of it, exactly. Stolen to buy the Hollow's votes.
Jeb read it over my shoulder with his fork in the air.
"That's a lie."
"It's a good lie," I said. "It sounds like something I'd do if I were him."
***
Sheree drove down from Chicago that night.
She called me from the bottom of the hollow at nine.
"Your road just ate my hubcap. Are there bears? Be honest."
"Only in the fall."
"I'm turning around."
She didn't turn around.
She walked into Granny's kitchen in her black suit and her white sneakers, carrying two banker's boxes and a bottle of bourbon.
She looked at the biscuits on the stove, the pill bottles on the windowsill and Jeb at the sink.
