Chapter 18: Diner
The light turned green.
A truck behind me honked.
I pulled onto the shoulder and sat there with the hazards going.
My phone rang in my hand. The hospital.
"Torrie Sadler," said Granny, in a voice like a rusty gate. "Is that you on the internet with no shoes on?"
"Granny, you had heart surgery yesterday."
"And a church lady called my room at six to tell me about it. Answer the question."
I looked at the photo again.
Me, barefoot, hair everywhere, coming down a man's lane at dawn.
"Yes, ma'am. That's me."
"Are you ashamed of it?"
I thought about the porch swing. The hospital chair. His hand on the back of my neck.
"No," I said. "I'm not."
"Then don't you dare hide in Lexington," she said. "It's Saturday. You know where that woman eats breakfast."

The diner sat on the highway, next to the motel where Bentley was staying.
Saturday mornings it was full of the Hollow, eating eggs and talking about everybody who wasn't there.
When I pushed the door open, the bell jingled, and twenty forks stopped.
