Chapter 10: Lark's Statement

Lark's POV

I was filling out the incident report for the Thanksgiving porch call when a silver Subaru rolled into the Maple Court lot and parked crooked across two spaces.

Natasha Ellingwood got out.

Two men climbed out of the back, both in dark jackets and both built like bouncers.

I knew what the Subaru meant. I knew what two men meant.

I had worked patrol for nine years, and I knew a person who had already decided how it would end.

I tossed the clipboard on the dash and got out of the car.

Inside, the nurse at the desk was saying "Ma'am, you have to sign the book" to nobody, because Natasha was already halfway down the hall.

I followed at a fast walk.

When I reached room twelve the door was open.

Calvin sat on the bed with a blanket across his knees. An old woman in a quilted robe sat by the window, looking at the ceiling.

Natasha stood in the doorway with the two men.

"Is it Tuesday?" the old woman asked.

"It's Friday," said Natasha gently. "You've had a visitor. Do you remember who he is?"

"A nice boy."

"A very sick boy," Natasha said, and turned to the hall. A resident in a walker had stopped to listen, and two aides, and the nurse. "I'm sorry to do this here, everyone. My brother is under a doctor's care and he left home without notice. These men are from the county transport service. We're taking him in for an evaluation."

She held up a sheet of paper.

I stepped between her and the bed.

"May I?"

Natasha's eyes flicked over my jeans and jacket and her smile didn't change.

"Officer Carmody. Off duty, I see."

"I'm on break." I took the paper out of her hand.
