Damon's POV

Maura came home at ten past midnight and told me everything standing up, with her coat still on.

The last thing she told me was about the witness line.

"It's my signature," she said. "Last November, on your discharge. I was the nurse on the floor, so they asked me to witness."

"And Brooks has a copy."

"He's had one for eleven months. The administrator sent it to him the day it was signed."

I sat at her kitchen table with my hands on the wood.

"You told me you were just doing pills," I said.

"I was."

"You signed the paper that said I was free."

"Yes."

"And then you spent eleven months telling me no."

She went still, with one arm half out of her coat.

"Say what you actually mean, Damon."

"You said Friday. You said not while I was your patient. I stopped being your patient in November, Maura. You knew it, you wrote your name under it, and you said no on Wednesday with my pulse under your thumb."

"I said no because you were hiding."

"I was waiting for a closing."

"You were in a room with a lock on the outside, and you could have left every morning for eleven months, and you chose not to."

"For a reason."

"I know the reason." Her voice shook. "I helped with the reason. I copied every tape. And every month you sat in that room and I watched you go gray for her, and I knew you'd stayed on purpose, and I thought, if I let myself, I would be a woman who sleeps with a man who is still deciding whether to walk out."

"I wasn't deciding."

"You were hiding, and I wasn't going to be where you hid."
