Chapter 18: The Final Problem
The Foundation released the final problem on Thursday morning, in a sealed envelope, to both teams at once.
The night before, it had been missing from the vault.
By dawn it was back, and nobody could prove where it had been.
The dean stood in the auditorium and read the title aloud.
"The Season Problem."
"Given a farm, a crew, a fleet of trucks and a cold store, with demand that changes every week for twenty-six weeks."
"Schedule everything so that no fruit is lost."
"And prove that no better schedule exists."
A cold murmur went through the room.
"The Foundation has offered this problem for eleven years," the dean said. "No team has ever fully solved it."
"Judging will be on how far each team gets, and how honestly it can prove it."
I looked at Peyton across the aisle.
She was not looking at the dean.
She was looking at me, with the small, cool smile of a person who has already read the last page.
