Chapter 7: Four-B

Bea took me to a bar two streets from the hospital and ordered me a whiskey I did not want.

"Tell me why you lied about the roads," she said.

"I can't."

"You can. You just won't."

I drank half the glass. It burned all the way down.

"If I tell you, it stops being mine to carry," I said. "It becomes yours too."

"I'm your sister. That's the point."

"You work for him, Bea. You'd have to look him in the eye every day."

She put her glass down.

"So it's about Damian."

I said nothing.

"Jo." She leaned in. "Whatever it is, he's the one who stood up in front of three hundred people and thanked you. He's the one still asking."

"He filed for divorce."

"After you lied to him for a year and a half. After you picked a ferry over your anniversary." She shook her head. "Honestly, if you told me you'd robbed a bank, I'd still say tell him."

The second whiskey came without my asking.

By eleven I was laughing at nothing, and Bea was typing for a rideshare with her tongue between her teeth.

"Home," she said. "You're coming to my place."

"I'm going to his."

"Absolutely not."

"He's alone in a rental. He thinks I picked Perry." I stood and the bar tilted. "I'm going to tell him the whole thing."
