Chapter 6: The Black Dress

I did not wear the black dress.

At seven the next evening I walked up the steps of the beach house in the gray jacket I had made myself, with my hair in its plain clip and a folder under my arm.

Gwen waited in the car at the bottom of the drive with the engine running.

Through the glass wall I could see a long table lit with candles, and twelve people sitting at it.

I knew most of them, because they sat on Russell's board with their wives.

Diana was at the head of the table in a green dress, with Russell on her right.

The chair at the far end had a name card in front of it.

It said Sylvia in gold ink.

A hostess opened the door for me, and the room went quiet.

"Sylvia," Diana said, smiling. "You came. Everyone, this is Russell's wife, and she has something to say to us tonight."

Russell stared at my jacket.

"I told you what to wear."

"You did," I said.

I walked to the middle of the table and stopped.

"Diana asked me to apologize in front of people," I said. "So I will. I'm sorry I believed him for seventeen years."

A fork rang on a plate.

"Sylvia," Russell said under his breath. "Sit down."

"On Halloween I stood outside your study with your shirt on my arm," I said. "I heard you bet Diana this house that I would never ask you for a divorce."

Nobody moved.

"Diana bet I would ask by the end of the week. You said, and I remember it word for word, that even if you left me alone again tomorrow, I wouldn't leave."
