Chapter 4: Next Door

I screenshotted all eight transfers and walked next door in my blue dress.

Wynn opened the door in a loose sweater.

Her smile fell off her face when she saw me.

"Monica."

Behind her, Milo sat in front of a cartoon.

My mother's china was on the dining table, still dirty from the steaks.

Dalton came out of the kitchen drying his hands on my apron.

"What are you doing here?"

"I came for my mother's dishes."

"We're just finishing up," Wynn said.

"Then you won't mind packing them."

Dalton sighed.

"Can we not do this in front of Milo?"

I held up my phone.

"Did you move fifteen thousand dollars out of our savings to Wynn?"

His face changed.

"Savings?" Wynn said.

She looked at Dalton.

"You told me that was your coaching bonus."

I looked at her for a long moment.

She wasn't acting.

She was white to the lips, and she was staring at him, not at me.

Dalton stepped between us.

"I made the transfers. Leave her out of it."

"That money was for our next fertility consultation."

"I know what it was for."

"Then why did you give it away?"

"Because Wynn has a real chance of competing overseas, and she needed help with training costs."

"And I needed another appointment."

"We've spent three years on treatments that didn't work, Monica."
