Chapter 15: The Narrow Bed

Nelson came up my stairs at six with two grocery bags and the look of a man entering a foreign country.

He had never seen my apartment.

He stood in the doorway and took in the radiator, the secondhand couch and the window onto the parking lot.

"It's small," he said.

"It's ours."

"I wasn't criticizing it. I was measuring where I can stand."

Percy took the bags and found the pancake mix and a rubber bone.

He made a noise.

"Is that for a dog?" he demanded.

"It's for a future dog," Nelson said. "Nobody's committing yet."

"I'm committing!"

We ate scrambled eggs at a table meant for two, and Nelson's knees hit the table leg twice.

At eight, Percy fell asleep mid-sentence on his bed, with the compass under his cheek.

I closed his door to a crack and found Nelson sitting on my couch with his tie off.

He looked at me, and I knew what he was going to say, so I said it first.

"She means to tell people you owe her for the boy."

"I know."

"Thirty-eight thousand for the night, and a bigger number for my son. That is the story she will tell on Friday."
