Chapter 5: Proctored

On Thursday the teaching room had two extra chairs by the door.

Kessling sat in one with his clipboard on his knee and his pen uncapped.

In the other sat the chair's delegate, a woman in a gray suit with a stopwatch on the table beside her.

The residents were packed in along the walls, Tom Dunn among them, and nobody was talking.

Eli lay on the table in the paper gown and watched the stained ceiling tile.

He had decided on the bus that he would not look at Gabe.

He had decided it again in the elevator, and again while he undressed.

"Mr. Winslow," Gabe said from the foot of the table.

His voice was flat, professional and perfectly even, and Eli felt it low in his stomach.

"Today I'll demonstrate the genital examination in full. Dr. Kessling and the chair's office will note that I do not touch beyond what the exam requires."

"Noted," Kessling said pleasantly.

"Mr. Winslow, knees up, please. Open your legs."

Eli did.

The gloves were cold for a second and then they were not.

"Inspection first," Gabe said to the room. "Skin, hair distribution, any lesion or swelling. We do this slowly. The patient is anxious, and a rushed exam is a bad exam."

His thumbs moved along the crease of Eli's thigh.

Eli stared at Ohio and counted the water marks.

"Now palpation. I take the testicle between my thumb and two fingers, here, with firm and even pressure, and I roll it. You are feeling for anything hard, anything fixed, anything that does not belong."

Eli's breath caught.

He had not been ready for the words said out loud in that voice.
