Chapter 22: Dawn

"Both of them," I said.

My breath came out white.

"The prince's heart stops at dawn," my godmother said. "And your beast's face sets for good when this frost melts. The sun will do both."

She held out one gloved hand toward the grass.

"It's a long time since I made two promises come due on one morning. I don't enjoy it."

"Then stop it."

"I can't, child. I keep my word exactly. It's the only thing I'm good for."

I sat down on the frozen roots beside her. My legs had given out.

She smelled of snow and cold air and, very faintly, of apple blossom.

"Who are you?" I said. "Really."

"Your mother's friend. Long before you were born."

"Then why did you come for me? On masquerade night. After three years of nothing."

She looked up into the branches of the Queen tree.

"Because your father asked me," she said.

I stared at her.

"He called me the night he died. People who know how can call me. He knew. Your mother taught him."

"He was very weak. He couldn't ask much. He asked for one thing."

"What?"

"One night for his daughter," she said. "He said, 'Maud will try to make her nobody. Give her one night when she remembers she's somebody.'"
