Chapter 31: Persimmons

"They keep showing the bit where the old lady touches the gate," Grandma said on the phone. "Is that my friend from the five-day market?"

"She knitted the whole way," Gyu-ho said.

"She would," said Grandma, and hung up on him, because she had to go and tell somebody.

On Tuesday afternoon he stood in the farm lane in Geumsan and looked up at the house.

The tin roof had rusted a little more along the gutter.

The persimmon tree in the yard was bare, all the way to the top.

The magpies had eaten their persimmon in December, the way they were supposed to.

Behind the house, past the ridge, the Tower stood on the north horizon in the clear air.

He had lived inside that for a hundred and eleven days.

Grandma was on the porch step in her flowered sun hat, though it was February.

She stood up when she saw him, and then sat down again, because her legs wouldn't hold her.

He went up the yard and knelt on the step and put his arms around her.

She was smaller than he remembered.

She smelled of pepper paste and the Cheongju guild house's dish soap.

She hit him on the back with her handbag, not hard, three times.

"You ate nothing but peppers," Grandma said into his shoulder. "I know you did."

"Tomatoes too," said Gyu-ho.

"Tomatoes," she said.

She held him off at arm's length and looked at him.
