Chapter 7: The Alpha Waits His Turn

Kael's beta stepped in front of him on the doorstep, and Kael put a hand flat on the man's chest and moved him back without a word.

The insignia came off his collar first. He set it on Dov's table, where Sera could reach it, and left his hand beside it.

'You brought your beta to my door,' Sera said.

'Fen doesn't speak unless I tell him to.'

'Then tell him.'

Fen was young, wide through the shoulders, and had the look of a man who had spent the ride rehearsing something. He glanced at Kael. Kael nodded once.

'The Alpha has suspended the Luna's authority over the archive,' Fen said. 'And over the training records. As of this morning. It's logged.'

Dov had come to stand in the kitchen doorway with a knife in one hand and a half-cut pear in the other. She did not put the knife down.

'Say it again,' Sera said. 'To her.'

Kael turned his head and said it to Dov himself. 'Lirien does not control the archive this morning. I took it back.'

Dov looked at the pear, then at him. 'And you want a receipt for that.'

'I want nothing from you,' Kael said. 'I came to say it in front of a witness, because I know what my word is worth at that table.'

Sera said nothing. She was watching the amber shimmer rise off his shoulders, and the thought coming through it was not triumph. It was: she will think this is for her.

He does not know what it is for yet. Neither do I.

'You suspended her,' Sera said. 'Not removed her.'

'Removing her takes the elders.'

'Then you have done the part that costs you nothing and kept the part that would.'
