Chapter 19: The Stairwell

I didn't wear white.

I wore red.

A short red dress with a square neck, under the black gown, and my mother's pearls, and my mother's gold cuff on my wrist.

Maisie zipped me into it at seven in the morning and stood back.

"Oh, he's going to hate that," she said with deep satisfaction.

"That's the idea."

"Wyatt's going to have a stroke."

"Wyatt's seen it."

"Ew. Never tell me things."

At nine-fifteen the quad was already filling.

White chairs in long rows.

Families in sundresses and blazers, grandmothers with programs, little brothers kicking the grass.

The chapel bell started to ring for the procession at half past.

I stood outside the chapel's side door with Wyatt and two campus police officers.

My father's head of security leaned on a tree twenty feet away, pretending to read a program.

"Five minutes," I said.

"No," said Wyatt.

"He's in there with her. Somebody saw them go in the back at nine."

"Then the police go in."

"And he smiles at them, and says he's showing his girlfriend the bell tower, and they leave."

I touched the pocket of my gown.

My phone was in it, face in, recording already.

"He talks to me," I said. "He always talks to me. He can't help it."

Wyatt's jaw worked.

"Stand where I can see you," I said. "That's the deal."

He looked at the officers.

One of them nodded and moved to the side door, so it stayed open a crack.

"Five minutes," Wyatt said. "Then I'm coming in, and I don't care who's smiling."

The stairwell was cool and smelled of old stone and floor wax.

I heard Brock before I saw him, his voice low and easy, coming up from one landing down.

The same landing.
