Chapter 15: Kitchen
Jerome did not say a word to me on the stairs of the boat club.
He did not say one in the parking lot either.
He put me in his truck, drove me to Maple Court, and walked me into the kitchen.
"The nurse called off tonight," he said. "Darla's dressings are at seven forty-five. I need your hands."
"It's past my hours."
"I know what time it is."
I did the dressings with him in the room, the way the rule said.
Darla held her arms out, and I unwrapped them one layer at a time.
She told me about a cartoon dog who could not swim.
I laughed in the right places.
By eight thirty she was asleep with the rabbit under her chin, and Jerome was standing in her doorway with the lamp turned low.
"Come out," he said softly.
I followed him down the hall to the kitchen.
He stood at the sink, running water over his hands, and I stopped in the middle of the floor.
"You came up the stairs in front of eighty people," he said.
"Yes."
"You said both things were true."
"They are."
"I stood there and listened to you say it, and I thought, that's the woman I married."
