Chapter 14: Boat Club
"I'll sign a sworn statement," I told the lawyer. "Today, for nothing."
"Mrs. Hildreth, the offer."
"I won't take the money, and I won't delete the text."
"I won't sell it either. If Cyril's lawyers say it's fake, I'll sit in their courtroom and swear it's real."
The lawyer closed the folder slowly.
"Mrs. Nimick expected that," he said. "She told me to tell you the offer was for the company, not for you."
"Then tell her the company can have my statement."
He wrote down the time and left.
Jerome stood at the sink with his back to me.
He didn't turn around.
"That was two hundred thousand dollars," he said.
"I know what it was."
"Darla's second surgery might not be covered."
"Then I'll find it another way."
He ran water over a glass that was already clean.
"Okay," he said.
That was all.
But his shoulders had let go of something.
The next morning, my sister called at ten past seven.
"Check your email," she said. "The school list. Now."
Darla's first-grade parents had a group thread.
I had been on it for two years, bringing cupcakes and signing field trip forms.
