Chapter 13: Home Rules
Darla came out of Lakeview Children's on a Tuesday, three weeks and five days after the fire.
She walked to the car herself, in soft slippers, with her arms wrapped in white sleeves up to the shoulders.
A nurse carried a bag of dressings behind her.
Jerome carried the rabbit.
I had cleaned the char off it with a toothbrush the night before and given it to him at the nurse's station without a word.
He had taken it just as silently.
Now it rode in his big hand, melted ears and all, and Darla held her good fingers up to touch it.
"He looks like he was in a fire," she said.
"He was," Jerome said. "He's tough."
"Like me."
"Like you."
I stood by my sister's car and watched them go.
Jerome turned his head at the last second.
"Follow us," he said. "You have a key coming."
The rental house stood on Maple Court, three blocks from Station 4.
