Chapter 18: My Son

I didn't say anything.

I looked at him sitting in the furs with his blood on a cream sleeve.

Every cent, he'd said.

The apartment. The doctor. The stroller.

And nobody in the world had heard him say it but me.

Behind me, quick heels came down the hall.

"Lili? The attendant said you..."

Connie stopped in the coat-room door.

She looked at Ricky. At his hand. At the long red streak down the white door frame.

"Oh," she said. "Oh, good."

"He grabbed for me," I said. "His hand was in the door."

"Doors are dangerous," Connie said. "Very common injury. I see it all the time."

She didn't go to him.

She opened her little gold clutch and took out a paper packet.

It was a sterile swab from the first-aid kit she carried everywhere, because she was a nursing student and couldn't help it.

She tore it open with her teeth.

She ran the cotton tip down the wet red streak on the door frame, slow and careful, top to bottom.

Ricky watched her from the floor.

"What are you doing?"

"Cleaning up," Connie said. "You're bleeding on a catering hall."

She dropped the swab into a sandwich bag from her clutch and sealed it.

Then she tucked it into her bra.
