Chapter 16: A Kitchen on Fire

Bianca turned back beneath the awning.

"You would burn the records for me?" she asked Damon.

He reached for her hand.

"For us."

She stepped away before he touched it.

"You knew what your father did to mine."

"Your father lost his shop before we met."

"That wasn't my question."

Damon looked past her at me.

"Chiara brought you here to make you doubt me."

"You brought me here when you asked me to stand at her altar."

Bianca walked down the steps and handed me her phone.

The screen showed an audio recording still running.

Damon saw it and lunged toward us.

Valerio caught the pack door before Damon could shove through.

He did not strike him.

"You can leave by the other side," Valerio said.

Damon stopped with his hand on the frame.

Bianca took back her phone and went to the tribunal herself.

I followed at a distance.

At the desk, she asked for a witness statement form.

The clerk offered a chair.

Bianca stayed standing while she spoke.

"Damon told me he could destroy the pages. He said they were false."

The clerk played the recording twice.

Then she wrote down Bianca's words and asked her to sign.

Bianca read the page before putting her name on it.

Damon arrived in time to see her hand leave the paper.
