Chapter 23: The Ledger Fund

Sixty-one families did not fit on the fourth floor.

They did not fit on the stairs, or the stoop, or the sidewalk in front of the laundromat.

By six o'clock the owner of the laundromat had propped open her door, pushed all the dryers against the wall, and put out folding tables.

"Don't thank me," she told Lou. "I haven't had this many people in here since the blackout."

Cal's crew brought trays of food in foil, enough for an army.

Somebody's aunt brought pernil, and somebody's grandfather brought a pot of rice.

Sean ran up and down the four flights with a clipboard, shouting "Plates!"

"Where did you learn to do that?" I asked.

"Kitchen," he said. "It's the same job, except nobody's on fire."

I stood in a corner by the soap machine in my gray sweatshirt, holding a paper cup.

I felt dizzy, because they were kids.

There were kids everywhere.

Tall ones in letterman jackets, and small ones under the tables, and a girl of about sixteen in a wheelchair with a laptop on her knees who looked at me across the room.

She wheeled over and stopped.

"Are you her?" she said. "The Ledger Fund?"

"I guess so."

"I got the grant for drafting school," she said. "I'm going to design bridges."

"That's a good thing to design."

"People said I couldn't. Dad said you can't tell anyone yes unless you can pay for it, so that means somebody paid." She grinned. "Thank you."
