Chapter 8: Sorry
On Monday I took the bus to the Ambrose tower with one of the ultrasound pictures in my coat pocket.
I had one reason.
The picture had a tiny hand on it, and I wanted Rhys to have it, and I wanted him to see it without his mother or his lawyers in the room.
The guard at the front desk looked at my name on a list and shook his head.
"I'm sorry, miss. You're not cleared for the building."
"I only need to leave an envelope."
"Mr. Ambrose's orders, miss."
It was five to noon, and the lobby was full.
The same forty people stood around the same long marble floor, with coffee in their hands.
I recognized the woman at the desk who had told me about the six-week wait.
I recognized the man by the planter who had snickered.
The elevator doors opened, and Rhys came out with his assistant.
He saw me and stopped walking.
"Mr. Ambrose," the guard said. "I told her she isn't on the list."
"Take the ban off her name," Rhys said. "Put her on every list."
"Sir?"
"Joss Merrow is cleared for every door in this building. Starting now."
The lobby went still.
He walked across the marble to me with his hands out of his pockets.
I took a step back, and then I stopped, because I had something to say, and I had waited ten days to say it.
"You called me a liar in this room," I said.
"I did."
"You said I came with a camera."
"I said that."
"You turned your head and looked at your people while you did it," I said. "You looked at them to see if they'd laugh. And the worst part is that I could see you were scared, and you still did it."
