Chapter 9: No Repeats
Rhys's penthouse had a wall made entirely of glass, and the whole city lay on the other side of it.
He had cooked.
It was pasta with lemon and butter, and it was good, and he watched me eat every bite.
"You made it yourself," I said.
"My mother's recipe. It's the only thing I can do."
"It's very good."
"Your pasta would be better."
"My pasta would put yours to shame."
He laughed, and the sound filled the room.
I put my fork down and looked at him across the table.
"I need to say something before anything happens," I said.
"Nothing has to happen."
"Something is going to happen."
He did not argue.
"I didn't plan it," I said. "Any of it. The night, the baby. I don't want your money or your name. If you ever think I do, I'll walk out that door and you will never see me again."
"I know you didn't."
He said it plainly, with no lawyer's face.
"I've known since the kitchen at my mother's house," he said. "Probably since the bathroom floor. I was a coward about it, Joss. That's all."
I stood up from the table.
My knees were not steady.
"No repeats," I said. "That was your rule."
"It was."
"So this would be breaking it."
"Yes."
"Good," I said.
He was out of his chair before I finished the word.
He took my face in both hands and kissed me.
It was hard and slow and deep, with nothing polite in it, and it tasted like lemon and his own mouth.
I made a sound against him that I did not recognize.
He walked me backward until my shoulder blades touched the cold glass, with the whole city lit up behind my head.
