Chapter 10: Her Bed
I walked into the living room in his shirt, and he turned around with the phone against his chest.
"You heard," he said.
"The box. The drawer."
"It's probably nothing."
"Probably."
"Boxes tear. It's a bad batch, or I was careless." He rubbed the back of his neck. "I just keep going over it. I've never had one fail. Not once, in fifteen years."
"Then it was a bad batch."
"Art says my housekeeper handles the drawer. She's been with the family a long time. I'll ask her Monday."
"Ask her nicely."
"I always do."
He crossed the room and put his forehead against mine, and I stopped being scared.
I let it go.
Looking back, I let it go too fast.
On Friday night I took him home with me.
Bex was on a double shift, and she had left a note on the fridge in thick black marker.
BEHAVE. I'LL KNOW.
Rhys read it standing in my doorway with his coat on.
"I like her," he said.
"She likes you less."
"That's fair."
He looked around my room.
It had a narrow bed, a bookshelf made of milk crates, and a window with the lake wind rattling the glass.
He had to duck under the slanted part of the ceiling.
"I'm too big for it," he said.
"It was fine for me."
"I mean the room."
"Then don't stay."
"Joss."
I took his coat off his shoulders and hung it on the back of the door.
I was surprised how steady my hands were.
"You asked for something real," I said. "This is where I live. This is the bed I'd be in if I'd never met you."
He sat down on it, and the mattress groaned.
He looked up at me with his hands on his knees.
