Chapter 26: Comeuppance
The speaker squealed again and died away.
Nobody laughed.
Dane stood in the middle of his own tent with the microphone in his fist, breathing hard.
His four investors were standing at the side of his booth in their pastel shorts.
None of them moved.
Behind me, Barrett hadn't moved either.
He was still holding my folded apron.
Then a small woman in a cardigan came up the middle of the horseshoe.
She walked the way she used to walk down the aisle at story time when somebody was hitting somebody.
Everybody got out of her way.
My mother stopped in front of Dane.
She was five foot two, and she had to tip her head back to look at him.
"Give me that," she said.
He actually gave it to her.
My mother took off her reading glasses and let them drop on their chain.
She tapped the microphone twice, the way she'd tapped it at a thousand summer reading kickoffs.
"Hello," she said. "Most of you know me. I'm Arlene. I read to your children for thirty years."
A few people in the crowd said, "Hi, Arlene."
