Neil didn't say anything to Mr. Coe.
He took his red hat off the bench, put it on and walked to the back stairs.
I went after him.
Mr. Coe let us go.
The boathouse level was gray with morning light from the little windows over the slip.
The frost on the floor had gone to water, and the footprints were gone with it.
Neil knocked on the door with the paper snowflake.
"Come in!" Erin called. "It's open, Neilly."
It was a small stone room with a space heater and a single bed.
She was sitting on the bed in a Tamarack fleece, braiding her wet hair.
On the shelf over the bed sat a softball, gray with dirt, signed all over in ballpoint.
I knew from Neil it was the ball from her senior year championship in Glens Falls.
"Hi, Meg," she said. "Is your mom okay? I heard she had a rough night."
Neil stood in the doorway with both hands on the frame.
"Which wrist did you break?" he asked.
"The right one. You drove me to the follow-up." She smiled at him. "You bought me a milkshake and told me I was an idiot for walking on the ice."
