Chapter 13: Meet Me at San Rocco

The car engine faded down the hill, and my phone buzzed in my pocket.

The number was new.

The message was short.

"Meet me at San Rocco. Come alone, Liv. If his men come, he'll kill me. Please."

I did not hide it.

I held the screen out to Lorenzo, because he had asked me for one thing and I meant to keep it.

He read it twice.

"She wants you without me," he said.

"I know."

"It could be a knife in the confessional."

"It could be Fiorella with a handkerchief," I said. "She's never held a knife in her life."

He looked at me for a long moment.

Then he said, "I'll be in the last pew. She will not see me unless you need me."

"And if she runs?"

"Then she runs, and I find her by dark."

I turned my phone to record, and put it in my coat pocket with the microphone facing out.

San Rocco was the church where Paolo and I had been baptized.

At ten in the morning it was cold and nearly empty.

Fiorella knelt at the candle rack in a pink coat, with her curls pinned up and her shoulders shaking.

I walked up the side aisle and stopped beside her.

"Liv." She grabbed my sleeve. "Oh, Liv, thank God. You came."

"I came."

"They'll kill me. You saw how he looked at me. Mama is gone and Paolo is gone and I have nobody."

She pulled an envelope from her bag and pushed it into my hands.

It was thick.

"That's forty thousand," she said. "It's from Mama's closet, the shoebox behind the winter boots. Take it, and a ticket, and say you never found the vial. Say I was never there. I'll leave and you'll never hear from me."

I looked at the envelope.

I looked at her hands.

They were folded around the strap of her bag, and they were not shaking at all.
