Chapter 18: In My Own Voice

Livia's POV

Seven men turned their heads to look at me.

I stood in the doorway with my father's dock ledger in both arms and a guard's hand still hanging in the air behind my shoulder.

Lorenzo had my eyes at once.

His face did not change, but his hand with the ring in it stopped over the table.

"Livia," he said, very low. "You gave me your word."

"I gave you my word I would stay home until you called."

"I haven't called."

"I know," I said. "I called myself."

The old man at the head of the table gave a small, indulgent smile.

"Signorina Santoro," he said. "You are brave, and it does you credit. But this is not a room for a girl."

"It's a room that voted on my head last night," I said. "I think that makes it my room too."

I walked to the long table, and set the ledger down in front of the empty chair beside Lorenzo.

I did not sit.

"You said the girl kept the books," I said. "That's true. I kept them for two years. Will somebody tell me how old I was when the skimming began?"

Nobody answered.

"Ten years ago I was fifteen," I said. "I was in a school uniform. I did not know what a ledger was."

The man from the north side coughed into his fist.

"Her father found the missing money," I went on. "He was going to confess to Lorenzo's family and put me in charge to make it right. He was shot for it by my brother, on my mother's order. That is why I keep the books. I was the repair."

I opened the ledger at the ribbon.

"This is the dock ledger, back to the year he died. I will put it in front of any man here. And before you read it, I would like to ask your lawyer a question."

The old man's smile did not move.
