Chapter 21: The Solstice Run

The pack gathered on the ridge at noon, when the sun stood lowest, and three hundred wolves stood in the snow in their winter coats.

The old woman in the cardigan walked the last mile on my arm.

She weighed nothing, and she held my elbow hard.

Anders and Mikkel walked beside us with their sleeves rolled to the elbow and their bare forearms in the cold.

I heard the murmur start the moment the first wolf saw the scars.

Nobody spoke to us.

The crowd opened down the middle, as it had at the Grange, and we walked through it to the flat rock where the alpha stood.

The three judges sat on camp chairs at the foot of the rock.

The eldest looked at me over her glasses and said nothing at all.

Torben stood beside his uncle with his right shoulder bandaged under his coat and his chin lifted.

"Wardens of the north post," the alpha said. "You have been accused."

"By me," Torben said, loudly.

He stepped forward.

"They broke their sentence, and I can prove it. They have had their hands on her since the first week. Look at her. Smell her."

"She stinks of them."

A rustle ran through the crowd.

"And that is not the worst," Torben said. "Look at their arms."
