Chapter 4: The Old Law

Duncan Strathclyde asked for the pack hall, and Dane, who had no choice, gave it to him.

Every elder came, and so did Valerie, who stood by the wall with her arms folded.

Hester took the chair nearest the door.

Tobin sat beside me, which nobody had invited him to do, and nobody argued.

Duncan didn't sit.

"There's an old law," he said. "The Crown keeps the book, because most packs forgot it."

"I know every law of this pack," Dane said.

"Then tell me what it says about a mate cut seven times."

Dane opened his mouth, and shut it.

"An Alpha who cuts the same mate seven times gives up his pack," Duncan said. "His rank goes to her at the next full moon."

I thought I had heard wrong.

Tobin made a small choking noise beside me.

"That's a story for pups," Dane said.

"It's page forty-one," Duncan said.

"Nobody has cut a mate seven times in two hundred years."

"That's why nobody remembers it."

The oldest elder, a wrinkled woman with white braids, put her hand flat on the table.

"My grandmother said it," she said slowly. "When I was small. She said an Alpha gets six chances at the goddess and the seventh is the pack's."

"Elder," Dane said.

"I didn't believe her."

"It can be undone," Duncan said, and now he was looking at me. "A re-bond, sworn freely, before the moon turns, and the law doesn't count. After that, she holds it. Black Pine is hers."

Nobody said anything.

Somewhere outside a wolf howled once, a long way off, and stopped.

I was twenty-six years old, and I had been a border scout since I could run.
