Chapter 14: Almond Croissants

On Tuesday morning I climbed the narrow stairs above a bakery in Hoboken.

My old Italian teacher had sent me there with a note in her shaky hand.

Her daughter was a divorce lawyer, and she had a corner office, a cracked leather chair and reading glasses on a chain.

She read the new petition from top to bottom without a word.

Then she took off the glasses and looked at me.

"Did this doctor in Hackensack ever examine you?"

"I've never heard his name."

"So he signed that you're unwell without seeing you."

"Yes."

"Good," she said. "That's the first stupid thing they've done."

She pulled a form from her drawer and slid it across the desk.

"Sign here, and your divorce is filed before lunch. Dario will be served by tomorrow."

I signed my name as Casey Bowen, the way I had before I was married.

The pen didn't shake.

"The judge on Thursday has been to every Brancato christening in the county," the lawyer said. "I can't make him leave. I can only make him look foolish if he stays."

"With what?"

"With whatever they wrote down that they didn't mean you to see."

I thought of the iPad in my bag.

I thought of nine names in a chat, and a feeling I had had since Sunday, that there was more than nine.

"I'll bring you something," I said.

When I came down the stairs, the bakery was open and the whole street smelled like butter.

Dario stood on the sidewalk outside it.

He had a paper cup in one hand and a bakery bag in the other, and he had not shaved.

Across the street, Renzo leaned on the truck with his arms crossed, and he did not move.
