Chapter 18: The Copy
Valerie's POV
I ran upstairs for my bag before Mitchell finished saying the word "wiped."
The old physical therapy duffel sat on the closet floor where I had left it.
My hands were so cold I fumbled the zipper twice.
I tore at the lining until it split.
The little drive was still taped inside the seam, black and scratched, where I had put it the night I left the party.
I sat down on the floor with it in my fist.
"He didn't look," I said.
Mitchell stood in the doorway with his arms hanging.
"He didn't know to look. He only knew about the server."
"His security man was in your closet."
"He's been in my closet since I installed it." Mitchell came and crouched in front of me. "He wiped what he could reach. This is the copy that matters, Valerie. If they find it, it's gone."
"Then it can't be here."
"No."
Phoebe answered on the first ring.
"Do not move," she said when I'd finished. "I'm at work. I'll be there by eleven."
"You don't have to drive out tonight."
"My sister is holding the only proof that her boyfriend is a psychopath in a gym bag. I'm driving out tonight."
She came at eleven in her kitchen whites with a freezer bag and a laptop.
She copied the file twice, standing at the counter with her tongue between her teeth.
One copy went into the freezer bag, and the freezer bag went into the flour bin at the back of her restaurant's walk-in.
"Nobody touches the flour bin but me," she said. "It's a rule. I will kill for it."
The second copy she put on the laptop she'd be carrying into the pool house on the thirtieth.
