Chapter 5: The Desk

I told my boss I needed my break early, and she looked at the black car across the street and gave me an hour.

Dominic got out when he saw me coming. He opened the door, and I slid in, and this time I sat close.

"Who is Greco?" I asked.

The car pulled away.

He didn't answer for a block.

"Silvio Greco keeps my books," he said. "He runs the betting side of the business. Why?"

"Ethan told me to ask you."

"Did he." Dominic looked out the window. "What else did he say?"

"That he was sorry. That he never thought it would go this way."

A muscle moved in his jaw.

"Is he a friend?" I asked.

"He's an employee."

"That's not what I asked."

"It's what I'm telling you." He turned and looked at me, and the look was heavy. "I'll find out what Regan meant. You have my word. Don't carry it alone."

It wasn't a lie.

It also wasn't all of it. I could feel the edge where the rest should have been.

But he had said it plainly, and he'd said he would look, and I was tired of being the only person in every room who wasn't allowed to ask for things.

So I asked for one.

"I don't want to talk about it right now."

"No?"

"I want to go where you take me, and I want you to stop answering me with your eyes on my mouth."

He said something low in Italian to the driver, and the car turned.

His study was at the top of the hotel, behind a door with no number.

It was a long dark room with a wall of windows and a desk the size of a bed.

He locked the door, and I heard it.

I put my bag down on a chair and took my coat off.

"One hour," I said.

"You have it."
