Chapter 14: The Offer

Hannah's POV

Lyle Carrow was leaning on my car in the staff garage at seven the next morning, holding two coffees.

Tobias had told me about the sixty-two million at midnight, sitting on the edge of my bed with the phone still in his hand.

Lyle had just emptied the company, and he was standing in my garage with coffee.

He held one out to me.

"Dr. Brooks. Do you have ten minutes?"

"No."

"Then five. It's good news."

I took the coffee because I wanted my hands busy, and I did not drink it.

He had a leather folder under his arm, and he opened it on my hood.

"Chief of Orthopedic Surgery," he said. "St. Anne's has been looking for one since March."

"Prospect Holdings is endowing the chair, three million a year for ten years."

"Your name is the one on the letter."

I looked at the letter.

The board's letterhead, and Lyle's name in the cc line again.

"The board voted to reinstate me five days ago," I said. "Now they're endowing a chair."

"The board changes its mind, like everyone."

"What do I have to do for it?"

He gave me the same sorry smile he had worn in the courtroom.

"One page. A statement from the treating physician."

He slid it across the hood.

It said that Tobias Carrow had shown signs of cognitive impairment during treatment.

It said that I had observed them and failed to document them.

It said that I had developed a personal relationship with the patient and that my judgment was affected.
